People often say that you can use a nextel or sprint phone with boost mobiles prepaid service. It is POSSIBLE to use your Boost SIM card in a Nextel and some sprint phones, BUT after awhile your Nextel phone will begin to have issues.
It may not happen right away, but although they may initially work together, your phone will begin to experience issues eventually and it is NOT RECOMMENDED to do so. And by "not recommended" I mean, do not do it if you care about the phone.
I have heard over and over that your phone will be damaged. Mixing the Boost SIM with a Nextel phone will void your warrant if and when your phone becomes messed up. Feature may disappear, your screen might stop working, your phone wont turn on.
It’s probably going to happen. If you want to use a Nextel phone, get nextel service. If you want prepaid Boost Service, get a Boost phone! Do not listen to your friend telling you that it will work! It technically can work, and it technically it doesn’t.

There is no danger using your boost sim in a nextel phone. this is crazy talk they are using the same packets you can even buy a startup kit that is made to do this very thing,

ROTFLMAO! What a joke, do you work for Sprint? And you say you have HEARD that this is true not I have experienced it. Well I can tell you from experience that a sim card does work in other phones. Phones act up from mis-use, beatings they take from everyday use. And if you call your provider (Boost,Nextel,or Sprint) they will reluctantly give you the code needed to open the phone if its locked. I have done this several times for my self and friends. I have many nextel phones that have worked for me with boost mobile sims in them over a period of several years without issue’s. And furthermore when you submited this tip did it not say at the very top that it was required to leave your NAME? Be a shame to let anyone know who their speaking with being they have no idea what they are talking about. (Boost,Nextel, and Sprint) Want you to use their phone’s because of cost, they rip you off on the price of phones. If you pay attention the boost and nextel phones are very simular with small minor differences and major cost diffeerences.

I was doing some reading i have a nextel phone its an i850 and i was reading because i want to try out nextels service and see how the reception is. from doing some research i found that nextel and boost are almost exactly the same service wise and phone wise. i read and read to see if i could get a boost mobile sim card prepaid and use it in my cell phone and every form said something new and all were different. so i called boost mobil and they looked up my phonme for me and told the that my phone would work. i think if you have any questions just call boost mobile about compatibility with your phone. there quick and down to earth!!

Boost and Nextel are IDEN, they use the same towers, same network, and are simply different only in company name (Boost leases tower space FROM nextel, they are the SAME, using a boost sim in a nextel phone WILL NOT hurt your phone!).

Actually, it’s the Nextel sim in a boost mobile phone that many people reported having issue with. This information was commonly distributed in 2007. Nextel claimed that their sim card in a boost phone would cause failure, but not the reversal, such as in this post:

need the code for boost mobile 855 but i have a nextel sim
January 1st, 2009 at 5:37 am
Call 611, they should be able to help you.
BTW- Boost does NOT lease Nextel space, Boost IS Nextel in prepaid form and not a seperate company. Technically, it is actually Sprint in prepaid form now that Nextel is only a brand name and not a company.
Sprint has two networks, CDMA and iDEN. Boost was originally iDEN (Nextel) only, but now has CDMA unlimited packages in certain market areas. The reason the Nextel SIM has trouble in a BOOST phone is because the Nextel SIM requires additional capability and thus an unlock. Placing a Boost SIM in a Nextel branded handset should work without any complication.

what about a curve 8350i?? i would like to buy a boost plan and put it into by blackberry, would it work??
February 14th, 2009 at 10:41 pm
I am hoping to do the same as the man above me. i want to get the boost unlimited plan and pop the sim into the 8350i blackberry that was made for nextel and even has chirping features. In theory it should work, but i just want a second opinion.
February 20th, 2009 at 12:18 am
I tried my BB 8350i and it did not work… it didn’t even get a signal and there was an error message that said something like path not found or something like that. Am I doing something wrong?
February 23rd, 2009 at 12:32 am
I just bought the Nextel 8350i blackberry. I switched my boost plan to the unlimited plan and put my boost sim into the new Blackberry 8350i…and I can not receive texts or even get on the internet. I am in the process of trying to find out why??
March 2nd, 2009 at 11:12 am
I have the boost service and am buying a nextel phone off ebay and hoping to put the sim in the nextel smartphone.
Did anyone who switched boost sim to nextel phone change the IME info on the boost website to match your sim card?
Also be careful of high data usage, I have heard rumors that even on the unlimited boost plan if boost suspect you have “high” data usage they will discontinue your service. guess they are catchin on to us..LOL.
March 4th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
So does the 8350i work for boost unlimited plan please let me know cause i want to buy it!
March 5th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
Yes, I have pre-paid unlimited boost mobile service and it works with my Nextel BB8350i. You need to install mini opera to be able to get to the internet, gmail to get your e.g. hotmail emails, just enable email forward on your current emails. BB service does not work on it so you would not be able to get text or bb emails.

thank you
March 11th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
The person who posted at the top telling everyone it will “hurt” the phone is brain dead. The only reason that anyone has issues with the boost or nextel phone is because all of these phones are basically crap. Nextel & Boost as other people already posted use the same network. Sprint has 2 networks, CDMA & iDEN. Boost Mobile sim cards work work in a Nextel phone to make calls. In the Blackbery you will not be able to use all the functions. When you put a Nextel sim card in a Boost Mobile phone it would not work without the phone being “unlocked”. Nextel phones are not sold locked, Boost are so that people can’t buy the cooler looking cheaper priced varient to use. Anyway like I said before iDEN phones are crap. I have used many, many, many of them. But screens don’t turn white due to a wrong sim card, ROFLMMFAO!!!
March 14th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
Does anyone have a list of nextel phones that wiil accept boost SIMs?
March 16th, 2009 at 12:02 pm

March 19th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
You are all idiots. The first time I dropped my Nextel phone with a Boost SIM in it, the whole thing went dead. That damn chip fried the VRM bus linking the ALU to the memory. DON’T DO IT!!!! Just settle for a crappy a$$ phone from boost.
March 19th, 2009 at 11:50 pm
I HAVE THE BOOST UNLIMITED PLAN AND IM USING A NEXTEL i880 WITH NO PROBLEMS. DROPPED IT AND IT STILL WORKS FINE. THE NEXTEL BLACKBERRY CURVE WILL NOT WORK THE RIGHT WAY WITH A BOOST SIM CARD BECAUSE IN ORDER TO USE THE BLACKBERRY YOU MUST HAVE THE BLACKBERRY DATA PLAN WICH BOOST DOES NOT OFFER CAUSE THEY HAVENT MADE A BLACKBERRY YET I READ THERE IS ONE COMING SOON. ALL OTHER NEXTEL PHONES OTHER THEN BLACKBERRYS WILL WORK FINE WITH BOOST SIM CARDS. I RECOMMED THE NEW BOOST i9 BEST PHONE BOOST HAS COME OUT WITH TO DATE
March 22nd, 2009 at 1:56 pm
Dear readers: As a boost customer i use a nextel I880 and never have any problems from it but to all you users that have a blackberry, even though you can put a boost sim into the phone, some features like the web and text messaging will not work. That’s because when you get with nextel using a blackberry they have a special package just for blackberries, so to make a long story short, I’ve been using my boost sim card in a nextel I880 and it works just fine but when i tried it in the blackberry i couldnt text or get on the internet, so i did some extensive research and found out that i needed nextel blackberry package in order to use those features.

Text is not a blackberry product or function–it is through SMS so should work with the keyboard of the 8350i. Does anyone know if you can at least get texting and voice on an 8350i using a Boost SIM?

Just got a blackberry curve 8350i and but my boost sim card in it. At first i thought i needed to activate it and went to update it on the boost website but it didn’t like esn# for the blackberry and wouldn’t accept it. Then I read the info on this site which told me not to do that. So I just put the sim in and turned it on. I can call out … and am going to check tomorrow about getting calls. Will look into Opera Mini — not that I honestly plan to go on the web much. I do like that I can see the screen on this phone… now that I am old the tiny screen on the i776 was impossible to read when I had my contacts in. Also… I missed the alarm. Just hope it will keep all my number correctly in my contact list. I have to program them all in before I can test.

My family personally had previously used Nextel and decided to convert our phones to boost, we went to the Sprint store and purchased the starter package, got home, put the new sim card into our nextel phones and was very happy to see the conversion go smoothly no complications. Each phone of ours works great, the service is just as good as sprint/nextel and we have had nextel for almost 10 years. Nice not having monthly bills and contracts. I would recommend this to anyone….whether you own your nextel or you purchase one from boost. THERE ALL THE SAME!!!!
March 26th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
I just bought a sprint/nextel ic902 thinking that it my work with boost mobile but it doesn’t match the sim card, what can i do

Let me fill you all in on a little info I just received from Boost Mobil. I just put a Boost sim card into a Blackberry 7100i. I could not text or use the internet. I found out through a little research that you need to download a third party browser. I chose Opera.(it seemed as if it was the most used) I used a third party mail program. There are many out there. They all worked great. Still no text messaging. I have been using the phone for 5 days now. Suddenly, I could not make calls. When I called a number the phone just rang on the other end. Never any connection. I called Boost. ( I spent 45 min on hold trying to get to tech support) I was told by them that the phone was not supported by the network due to the size of the sim card 64 bit. This phone is a Nextel unlocked phone and it requires a 128 bit sim card. If you continue to use it with your 64bit sim, you can burn up your phone and sim card.
This is what a techie friend of mine said. Find a blank 128 bit sim card for the IDEN system and copy your old info from the 64bit sim onto the new card and you will be up and running with no problems. Check ebay for the sim cards and you need to buy a reader/writer arond $19 dollars on ebay as well.
I hope this info helped. Please keep in mind this info is for all Blackberry’s. I don’t know about other phones.
April 6th, 2009 at 11:22 pm
i googled boost mobile unlock codes and i purchased a software download and a cable to connect the phone to my computer and so far i have been able to unlock boost phones and use them with nextel sim cards but personally i recommend using the boost service as it is a much better value than the nextel service also the first generation nextel blackberry will work with the boost sim card with some minor modifications but i have found the newer models are not supported

Hey guys, I’m currently on the $50/mo unlimited plan on Boost. from what ive read here, I understand that there shouldn’t be any problems placing my SIM into a Nextel phone and being able to use it right away without needing to do anything more… I am buying an i870 on ebay that has previously been used on Nextel. The buyer says it is ready to swap SIM, and the serial number is cleared.
I just want to make sure my boost account will carry over to this phone without needing to “unlock” anything or dowload any software to fix texting or internet or all that.
April 10th, 2009 at 8:42 am
There shouldn’t be any problem, I did the same thing. I purchased an i570 and have no trouble with my boost service
April 13th, 2009 at 7:05 pm

April 22nd, 2009 at 11:23 pm
i have just called nextel ‘611′ and spoke with an operator your not able to use a boostmobile simcard in the blackberry 8350i because there ‘is’ certain packages that you need for each one. i too am planning on getting the 8350i. and the i880 does work perfectly fine with boost mobile. but if there is the need to download software will it be simple??

I enjoy reading all the various comments, advice, and info on this site. I have a question. I have a Treo 700WX (Sprint) and I’m wondering if I can use it for BOOST. I read somewhere (http://forums.intomobile.com/boost-mobile/122236-boost-mobiles-50-unlimited-plan-really-worth-please-read-my-details.html)that I can, since BOOST uses both IDEN and CDMA. However, after reading the various posts here, I’m no longer sure. Please help. Thank you.

No your boost mobile sim will not work in a sprint phone. Boost sims only work on nextel and boost. Sprint uses an ESN to activate the phone (electronic serial number or imei or hex or dec #)and not a sim card (unless you take an intl gsm world phone that roams on another carrier, but the boost or nextel sim still wont work on it as sprint is on a cdma network. Iden is a network all of its own an no other carrier uses iden. Sprint/Nextel- same company 2 different networks. PS a 32k 64k or 128k sim card can be used in any current nextel phone. I am using the old white/gray 32k sim card in a nextel i355. The guy above saying it will burn up the phone is full of it
I sell Nextel phones used on ebay. My ebay id is bellacommunicatons. I have been on there 8 years and I am an ex Nextel/sprint corp sales rep. If you or anyone is interested in a nextel phone or blackberry I have about 700 of them coming in in 4 days.

Sorry Bellacommunications!

Convert your Nextel Blackberry to work on Boost Mobile: This is the heading you can search for on ebay. This is software that converts your BlackBerry to work on the boost network.. I mean everything will work, my 8350 BB works perfect now that I bought this on ebay.. It’s step by step and not that difficult to do.. The price ranges anywhere from 6.99-32.99 on ebay..

Alright, having been working for AT&T Tech for a few years now, i can shed some light on the “what works, what doesnt” dept.
Most of your PDA/Smartphones are going to have an issue because they require a Data connection that didnt used to be offered on a pre-pay level. now there are a few companies that are working on this; i.e. AT&T, Verizon, Virgin Mobile…
none the less, because of this, most of the blackberries require a data plan and IPDN tracking code to be entered into the provider’s billing system (the iphone is a great example). now there are a few ways around this; unlocking the phone, knowing someone on the inside to provision these codes, but they dont always remedy the situation. now earlier in the convo i saw where someone had concerns about the sms/mms feature of their blackberry on the boost mobile level. well the biggest way to explain this issue is this, the blackberrys that are set for nextel’s service are set to run with the sms feature enabled, as compared to the provisioning on the boost billing system is mms only. by doing this, boost/nextel are able to cut down on their operating costs, nextel by being capable of blocking data features for a cust, boost by easier troubleshooting for data use. to keep the long description short, nextel phones use the voice network to send sms, where as boost phones send on the data network only. how does this affect you?
well simply put, most nextel phones can send mms, but a blackberry does it a little differently. because it works on a smartphone O.S. it has an app for mms. this app isnt provisioned for the boost billing system, thus mms is disabled, and as stated earlier, mms is the standard messaging level of boost. same deal with the internet, so i wont go into that.
the whole thing summed up is this;
if you dont know, call the provider. by the def of customer service, they do answer customer questions. and seeing as how boost is owned by sprint, (nextel is a brand, not the provider) either of these two companies would be more than happy to help.
hope this helps a few people, and im sorry i dont have more info. if you ever want to know about AT&T, im your man.
October 28th, 2009 at 4:08 am
oh, and to add to the inital concern of this thread, no, swapping providers is not going to ruin your phone. running invalid unlock software by a less-than-trustworthy provider, using the wrong sim card (64k when 128K is needed), and adding third party software that runs the processor beyond device capabilities is what ruins the phones.

This question is for Cory-I have ATT (LG Vue) and just purchased a Boost Clutch…I don’t want to have to change numbers and all of my info, how can I or can I save everything and still be able to use Boost?

December 1st, 2009 at 9:42 pm
answer to john, there is no easy way to do it, but if boost supports porting numbers, that would be the best way to go. to answer your second question before you ask, the vu will not by any means work on the sprint pcs, boost, nextel network.

taleytha, sorry. that comment was for you.
December 4th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
You sir, are a fucking garbageman. What a dumbass. Yes, the sim card is like a virus that slowly eats away at the phone. Fucking idiot.
December 5th, 2009 at 6:02 pm
I JUST WANT MINTES I DONT KNOW WHAT OF ANY OF THIS SHIT MEANS BECAUSE IM ONLY 11 AND I HAVE A KYOCERA PHONE DICKS SO IF YOU CAN ANWSER MY QUESTION CALL ME AT 304 573 7938 O WAIT I DONT HAVE ANY MINUTES
December 8th, 2009 at 10:26 pm
wow, you’re about an ass for being 11. And seeing as how you are using a kyocera device, chances are you have next to no buisiness atempting to unlock it, its not worth the headache swapping it to a different network. What a lot of people fail to relize, is unlocking a device is only really convieniant for people who plan on travelling to an area in which their phone would otherwise not work or be billed as roaming. Other financial reasons of course being that an unlocked device can sell for more, but this goes right back to the international bit, we tent to have really nice equipment in the states as compared to what a lot of international distributers have produced. I can’t think of any real reason why an 11 year old would even need to consider unlocking their device, nor why they would be on a thread for unlocking to ask about adding ‘minutes’ to their pre-paid device.
Random point as well, a lot of major cell phone providers such as but not limited to att, verizon, altell, and t mobile do not actually lock prepaid devices, nor will they unlock them if they are. This deters people from using pre-paid equipment on post-paid accounts to avoid a contract. att is notorious for not informing people of this; if you activate a line with COAM equipment (customer owned and maintained equipment) you are not usually required a contract, thus not ETF’s for cancelling.

And Wes, not to make you look like an idiot or anything, but I took some time at work the other day to call an IT from Sprint/Boost to get to the bottom of that, and what i said was 100% true. no sim card will actually be able to damage the device, unless you are using a sim card that is not rated for the device in which you are trying to operate. case in point, the Apple iphone works with a 64K sim card on the ATT network, but a lot of customers recycle their old sim cards when they process the upgrade. although the device will allow them to do this, customers that are using any less than a 64K card experience poor talk and data quality, as well as constant network issues and low signal strength. Now, although the device functionality is affected by this, it causes no damage to the device itself. What you are more referring to is people who “jailbreak” devices, aka, make and add programs that allow the device to exceed its standard OS limitations to preform more functions. This will cause device damage, usually to the processor, but occasionally to the device memory.
And on a more personal note, a virus is not something that should ever be used in the same word as a sim card, all a sim card is is a chip with network information on it telling the device what channels, frequency, and wave on which that particular subscriber is supposed to be operating on; as well as whatever the consumer decides to save to it (usually contacts)

i have the boost 50 unlimited plan i had 2 different nextels that i bought off ebay both worked fine- the i850 and the i 530, i just bought an i920 and it works for phone calls incoming and outgoing and the walkie talkie, it does not work however for text messaging or internet i called 611 i call corporate offices and everynumber i could, they all said there was nothing that could be done boost does not support certain phones due to chip size, a couple phones they mention were blackberrys and any smartphone from nextel, they said they would not be supported at all, do yourself a favor dont purchase any nextel phones without calling and asking first u will be stuck with the phone and not be able to use it fully,

OK, I am on the phone right now with Nextel Cust. Care. I was on the phone a while ago with Boost CC. Here is what I am trying to accomplish, and will ultimately accomplish (mainly because I am not going to give up now- I can be a little bull headed at times). I have an i776 (my boost phone) and an i 885 (my nextel phone). Both are active phone lines, I got the boost phone for personal and the Nextel was given to me from my company. My company wants me to swap the sim cards from one phone to the other because the boost phone is more rugged, and so they will give me the other phone to keep as my personal. I figure fair trade there since I like there phone better anyways.
I swapped the sim cards and the boost sim works fine in the nextel. The Nextel sim however isn’t working in the Boost phone. So I called Boost CC, after a short 3 min hold, they advised me that this was not a big issue, I would have to contact Nextel CC and get the sim unblocked.
So I call Nextel, as stated above, the company was reluctant to give me the “OK” to do the swap. Now at this point, there are two paths you can take. Path A) is to go off the handle and hope to bully your way into getting it. Option B) is to be polite and respectful and make it so that they want to work with you. Even though Option A may be more fun at times, I chose option B. When I described my goals to the CC lady, she advised me to hold so she could check with her supervisor (who I later found out was also her husband). She came back to the line a moment later, and went on and on about how we couldn’t do it because of the logo not matching the service and because of such the device would not be in the data base. I advised her that I had done this in the past and would like to speak to the source of her information. Again she placed me on hold and transfered me to the supervisor. He was nice and polite, and he began to tell me the same thing she had. I politely advised him that my company has a lot of phone lines with them, and that we had done this once in the past, and didn’t see the issue. (White lie in doing this in the past…sorry.)
He then started saying that there might be a way if they add the phone info to their data base. So he “added” the boost phone to his data base. I put that in quotes because I could hear his keyboard and for this instance there was no typing- he was trying to save face. No big deal, I remained polite with him because what if something didn’t work right, I wanted to have him happy to fix it. Good thing I was polite about it. There was an issue with the sim card being blocked as boost had said, but he didn’t get the right codes into the phone. Now the boost phone is blocked, and it is his fault. He could just provide poor CC and leave me hanging, but instead he is not only crediting me 3 months of Boost unlimited for free, he is going to get the phone serviced for free, and he activated an older Nextel we had here with my number while I wait for the boost phone to be fixed. Somehow we got the entire phone completely locked out now.
Maybe this guy didn’t know his job, and I spent more than 2 hours on the phone with him, but if you are polite to them and they make a mistake, they more than take care of it.
Bottom line of all this is that it is very possible, don’t accept no from CC and be polite with them since they are just doing there job to try to make their companies more $$ so they keep jobs. If you have patience and time, you can do this.

Hope this shines some light to ppl lookin to buy a blackberry 8350i and use their boost sim card in it. Its very possible, ive done this myfelf and was very happy. Problem at first was getting it unlocked. When I first inserted the boost sim the phone could make and receive calls and walkie talkie but no text messages or internet. After i went to some nextel/boost retailers they told me it was possible to get the phone to full capacity but it was kinda tricky and they couldnt do it. I finally came to a place where they did flashing to cricket and had a boost sign as well. So i tried them and after a 10 min, their own software and data cable. They were able to unlock it, or do something to it but finally was able to surf the net with the blackberry browser or opera and send and receive text messages (although not as fast i would like them to receive em) Sometimes i would have to turn off and on the phone to receive text messages but oh well. Point is, it does work you just need to have patience, and know where to look for these ppl who do this and yeah 50 bucks which was the price to unlock it lol. Theres also software to unlock ur BB you just gotta know where to look for it. NOTE: When you get your BB unlocked, and put your Boost sim in it, never put another sim card in it, if its not boost, this may damage the phones OS. and you maybe screwed. Thats what i did, so i went back to my clutch. LOL oh well, hope this helps answer some questions. Enjoy.

If and when I get it up and goping with MMS I will come back to let you all know….
