Page Plus Cellular - Best Prepaid 2008

Page Plus Cellular is a not so well known in the prepaid phone market which may cause some apprehension for possible customers, but let me tell you, in Page Plus Cellular’s case, small is good. I have to say, they are the best prepaid service of 2008.

What makes them worth mentioning?

  • Verizon Network
  • Use ANY Verizon phone regardless of how old it is
  • Easy to add money
  • Cheapest Prepaid Minutes
  • Only monthly cost is 50 cents. No hidden fees, no annoying expiration dates
  • Free Internet / Data
  • Unlimited Calling for under $75 a month… Cheaper than MetroPCS

So, as you can see,  Page Plus Cellular has done what other’s haven’t. You can use good phones, or you can use old cheap phones, and it’s cheap (bye bye T-Mobile). With an unlimited plan for $75 a month, with internet, who else can beat that? The great part is that they are small when compared to Virgin Mobile or Boost Mobile, meaning they are willing to offer better deals. They pretty much took what sucked about every other prepaid company and fixed it all to create the best prepaid phone service ever. You can learn more about them on the Page Plus Cellular Forum.

These guys blow Virgin Mobile, T-Mobile, ATT, and Boost Mobile out of the water! With that unlimited, I might switch from MetroPCS.. What good is a phone that works only in your metroplex? Well.. Okay.. If you don’t travel MetroPCS is still king.

As with all things cellular this is a little complicated to compare and it does also depend on what your needs are. I’ve been a PagePlus customer for several years and all four members of my family use it. I like PagePlus because I’m looking for bottom dollar for cell service and assume a minimal amount of usage.

Page Plus requires a purchase every 120 days in $10, $25, $50 or $80 “chunks.” The larger the chunk the lower the per minute cost. $10 gets you about 12 cents per min; $80 gets you about 6 cents per min. Unused minutes roll over.

Virgin Mobile’s prepaid plan (the one featured most prominently on their web site) requires a purchase every 30 days or else your unused minutes expire. Their smallest chunk is $20 (10 cents per min) and their largest chunk is $50 (5 cents per min). So, if you’re a very light user your monthly cost could be as low as $2.50 per month under Page Plus but as high as $20 per month on Virgin. Then, it looks to me like text might be an additional charge. And of course you would have to remember to refill every 30 days. I haven’t worked out under what scenario Virgin might be cheaper than Page Plus.

There are other subtleties, too, such as how text messages are charged, limitations on web access, and other Virgin Mobile plans but if someone’s looking for a plan they just need to look carefully before buying.
